DOE laboratories

AFCI is supported by fuel cycle research performed at 10 national laboratories, dozens of universities located across the country, and our international collaborators’ laboratories. The goal of the AFCI program is to develop fuel cycle technologies that will support the economic and sustained production of nuclear energy while minimizing waste and satisfying requirements for a controlled, secure, safeguarded nuclear materials management system. Key accomplishments for the year include advancements in systems analysis, separations, fuels development, transmutation engineering and education, and fuel cycle facilities. Research performed directly contributes to expanding our understanding of the fuel cycle and the larger GNEP vision.

The following 10 DOE National Laboratories are performing AFCI research:

Argonne National Laboratory
Brookhaven National Laboratory
Idaho National Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Sandia National Laboratories
Savannah River National Laboratory
