Congress provided funding in FY 2006 for siting studies associated with potential integrated recycling facilities. To support this, the Department issued a funding opportunity announcement in August 2006, and in January 2007 established grants with 11 commercial and public consortia to conduct detailed siting studies of 11 sites for integrated recycling facilities. The 11 sites include six DOE-owned and operated sites and five privately owned sites. The recipients developed detailed site characterization studies over a 90-day time period and submitted final reports to DOE on May 1, 2007. These studies provided environmental data that will be important if efforts proceed in the future to site integrated recycling facilities. While the GNEP Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement is not evaluating or considering siting integrated recycling facilities, the results of these studies could be used as input to future NEPA analyses.
